“Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter which fork you use”. –Emily Post
Does it seem people are ruder than they used to be? Letting doors swing shut on you, not greeting or smiling when they pass? It may be time to bring back the social graces in order to make the world feel a friendlier place. Today’s homework is to up your etiquette, and bring back the civil part of civilization.
Use politeness words: please, thank you, you are welcome, I’m sorry.
Let others go first, hold a door, look at people when you’re speaking, smile.
If you’re visiting with someone and not on call for emergencies, put away your cell phone.
Notice other’s efforts, kindnesses and strengths. Try not to attend to whether others are using their manners; focus on being part of the solution. But if you notice others being courteous, be appreciative. If it’s in a customer service role, tell their employer it made a difference.
Kindness is contagious. Giving it and getting it lightens our load. What can you do to make where you are a welcoming space today?
