Welcome back to a new term, Roadrunners.
A nice thing about school is that chance for a fresh start every few months. Even for those of us working here, there’s a spring-ness to each quarter: shaking off the old and beginning anew.
It’s easy to get bogged down by the busy-ness, and yes, the unavoidable repetitiveness of some aspects of school, life, work.
This is a reminder that every day is a chance to learn, discover, create and grow. If you’re in a rut, whether just this minute or for the last few months:
Do something a little different. Shake it up. Just a little bit, but pretty often.
There’s some interesting research (Seligman, et al.) that shows changing even little things in our routine can break up those ruts. I’m not talking about a huge Life Change Self Improvement project. Something as small as taking a different route to class, saying good morning to people, taking a three minute exercise break or using your nondominant hand for a couple of hours has a way of nudging stuck brain into new directions.
And since it’s a new term, maybe even think of doing a little personality plagiarism: act AS IF you have the traits of someone you admire for some time. There’s a lot to be said for the AA saying “Fake it til you make it.”
The thing about ruts is that the tracks are so well-grooved that it can be easier to fall into them than to pull out of them. Doing something new, even if it seems small, creates new paths that can lead to all sorts of good directions.
How can you shake things up in a good way this week? Let me know about something new you’ve tried.
