Thoughtful Thursday: Resolution Musings

Welcome to a brand new year!

It’s tradition to make grand promises for how we’ll do this one differently. And if that speaks to you, there are lots of great resources on making resolutions and on making them stick.

I’m going to be a generalist this year, with the world’s simplest and biggest goal: Be nicer. As in: be nicer to myself, to others, to community and the planet.

Sounds lofty, but like all good goals, I’ll want to break it down, in this case by working backwards. What did I do today towards each or any? Maybe I chose to walk instead of drive someone — nice to my health and to the earth. I smiled at people and engaged them in positive conversation: nice to me, others and community, I hope.

I’ve been reading the Surgeon General’s report on the cost of loneliness to our health and our communities, so a lot of my focus is going to be on bucking the trend of going it alone. I expect it will improve my health and happiness, and not at the expense of others. Hope you will join me in making 2025 a welcoming, happier year.

And a last thought: If you haven’t made your resolutions yet, remember every breath is a chance to start again.
