RoadRunner Wellness – 5 Tips for Summer Wellness

Hey, Roadrunners!

Summer is finally almost here! Now, I realize that not all of us will take the same path after this term ends. Some are graduating and on to the next thing – maybe finding that first job, or moving on to university in the Fall, or maybe something else. For those of us sticking around here, some may be taking the time off, or like me, taking a full load of classes. No matter what you’ve got planned, now is a good time to consider how you will incorporate wellness into the coming season. If you must work or continue classes this summer, don’t forget to take some time to enjoy yourself, too. Keep some balance if you can.

Here are some tips for staying well this summer:

  1. Stay hydrated! I’m sure you’ve heard this many times, but it is always a good reminder for me. It is so easy to forget to drink enough water. Make this a real priority, especially for long days at the lake or hiking where a sink or store might not be right around the corner! Heat illness is a real thing, and it can really put a damper on your fun. Caffeine and alcohol can have the opposite effect, so be careful!
  2. Eat healthy foods. Again, not to be annoying, but what we put into our bodies contributes greatly to our overall health and well-being. Foods that are heavily processed and full of chemicals aren’t doing your gut microbiome any favors. Consider increasing your intake of greens and vegetables. Fresh fruit is in season and is incredibly delicious on a hot day! Think watermelon, peaches, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and cherries! Would you ever try doing “Meatless Mondays?”
  3. Sleep! You’ve worked hard all year. You’ve lost sleep at times trying to finish homework, studying for an exam, or working night shift to try to make ends meet. Prioritize some real, rejuvenating sleep. Find a cool, dark, cozy spot – put your phone down, turn the TV off, and zonk for a while. You deserve it!
  4. Stay connected. For some of us, when we don’t have to be somewhere, we might just stay home. This is good sometimes for sure. However, don’t forget to stay connected with others regularly, too. It’s the perfect time of year to do BBQ’s, picnics, hikes, lake days, beach trips, etc. Get outside and enjoy the sunshine we miss so badly! Don’t forget your sunscreen and always think of safety first. Have fun!!
  5. Exercise. There are so many ways to get some exercise when the weather is good! Make it a goal to get 30 minutes a day of some kind of movement. Do what you can and be proud of yourself! Pair up with a friend, or enjoy the solitude, but consider getting active this summer. Exercise can help in many ways, not only for physical health, but also for mental health. I used to be a runner and once I got conditioned, it was therapeutic. It is a goal of mine to get back to it! For now, you’ll catch me walking, swimming at the community pool, and chasing my three-year-old daughter.
