“Ghostbusters Frozen Empire” A Chilling, Spooky Treat

“Ghostbusters Frozen Empire” is the 2024 sequel to the 2021 hit film “Ghostbusters Afterlife.” Marking the fourth film in the main continuity and the fifth theatrical installment overall; the movie marks the ideal horror-comedy to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the franchise.

Two years have passed since the events of “Ghostbusters Afterlife.” As an ancient threat known as “Garraka” seeks to engulf New York City with a spectral “death chill,” both old and new Ghostbusters alike must defy the obstinate mayor Walter Peck (William Atherton reprising his role) in order to save their city.

The film is directed by Gil Kenan, who also co-wrote the script alongside the previous film’s director Jason Reitman (son of the late Ivan Reitman, who the film is dedicated to). Though the movie may not go the same emotional lengths as its predecessor, seeing both the new and old characters onscreen is a delight. Over 115 minutes, the story pays homage to the franchise’s past while laying foundations for its potential future.

Visually, the film builds on its predecessors with a blend of digital and practical effects. Even taking into account decades of advances in special effects; the ghosts and other paranormal phenomena faced would not be out of place alongside the original films released in 1984 and 1989. From its opening moments to the final battle with Garraka, the movie proves to look every bit like its reported $100 million budget.

While the film may lack the same dramatic qualities its immediate predecessor did, it is still a legacy sequel made for and by fans of the franchise. Even if the future of the franchise remains unclear at this time (an animated spinoff is in development for Netflix), the series still commands a sizable and devoted audience. The film’s release is a testament to the franchise’s enduring legacy.

Overall, “Ghostbusters Frozen Empire” is a chilling and spooky treat that’s well worth its place in the franchise’s history. It’s an easy recommendation as “bustin’ that makes you feel good.”
