“Dune Part Two” is the sequel to the 2021 adaptation of “Dune.” Adapting the second half of the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, director Denis Villenueve has delivered the definitive adaptation of the book and joined the ranks of his best works to date.
Picking up where the events of the first part left of, the film continues the story of Paul Atriedes (Timothee Chalamet, “Wonka”) as he seeks to liberate the desert planet of Arrakis from the rule of Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard). With the aid of allies such as Stilgar (Javier Bardem, “No Country for Old Men”) and the enigmatic Fremen Chani (Zendaya, “Spider-Man: No Way Home”); Paul goes on a journey of personal growth and mystical discovery across a mammoth 2-hour-and-46-minute epic.
Though the book had previously been adapted on film in the year 1984 and as a TV miniseries inn the year 2000 (as well as an unmade pitch in the 1970s from Alejandro Jodorowsky); this film brings the story to life in a manner fans have been waiting to see for decades. In addition to the majority of cast and crew returning from the first film; a host of new cast members join as key players from the book. Austin Butler (“Elvis”) brings a terrifying ferocity to Feyd Ratha, while Florence Pugh gives a performance equal parts alluring and mysterious as the Princess Irulan. Christopher Walken as the Emperor gives a sense of both dread and ambiguity to the proceedings.
In terms of audio and visuals, the film is a spectacle that deserves to be ranked alongside the likes of “The Dark Knight,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” and “Star Wars: Episode V- The Empire Strikes Back.” The massive sandworms and face-to-face knife duels are among the best work Villenueve has committed to film yet; and the multi-phase final battle on Arrakis is easily one of the best finales since Helm’s Deep. If you can, it’s a sequel that demands to be witnessed on the biggest screen you can find. To quote Paul Atriedes himself, “it’s breathtaking.”
With an adaptation planned of the next novel, “Dune Messiah” and a prequel series being developed for the streaming service Max; “Dune Part Two” is a modern classic that’s highly recommended.
