A surprising number of adults who drink alcohol resolve to reduce or abstain as part of their New Year resolutions. A survey from 2024 showed over a quarter of adults participated in “Dry January,” a month on the wagon that showed a multitude of benefits. 30 days booze-free improves REM sleep, benefiting cognitive function, alertness, memory and energy. Deeper, more refreshing sleep is something nearly all of us need. Participants also noticed improved mood, skin tone, lower blood pressure, and lowered their risk for acid reflux, liver disease and other serious health risks.
Although many people like the buzz or relaxation alcohol provides, abstaining can improve your mental health beyond just feeling better physically. Alcohol overuse increases anxiety and depression by suppressing dopamine and serotonin, two of our “feel-good” neurotransmitters.
