Hall of Fame: Former LBCC President Greg Hamann Honored by AACC

LBCC President Emeritus Greg Hamann inducted into American Association of Community Colleges Hall of Fame

The American Association of Community Colleges has announced Greg Hamann as one of six new members of its national Hall of Fame and earning the 2022 Leadership Award. Hamann is the president-emeritus of LBCC, where he served as president for 10 years before retiring in 2020.

AACC announced and inducted awardees at its annual conference, held in New York City this month. Recipients were chosen for their unique and impactful contributions to the community college sector over their careers.

“If I’ve learned anything over these past 40 years in higher education, I’ve learned that leadership is NOT an individual sport,” said Hamann during his acceptance speech. “I would not be here if not for the educators that I’ve worked for who saw some possibility in me way before I saw it in myself. I would not be here if not for the co-workers who affirmed what was good in me….. and graciously encouraged me to consider the things that weren’t so good. I would not be here if not for the students who taught me as much as I taught them.”

During Hamann’s tenure as LBCC president he grew the college’s mission of student success in a number of ways, including launching a nationally recognized Guided Pathways initiative, increasing capacity for healthcare and career technical education programs, passing a bond initiative that led to the construction of several new buildings, creating a local Pipeline to Jobs program, and leading new efforts in equity, diversity and inclusion. Prior to LBCC, Hamann served as president at Clatsop Community College in Oregon for seven years. He has served on many boards, including AACC’s board of directors including the oversight board for AACC’s Voluntary Framework for Accountability, and the President’s Advisory Council to the Association of Community College Trustees.

Other recipients of the award included Constance Carroll (San Diego Community College District), Gerardo de los Santos (Western Governors University), Katherine Johnson (Pasco-Hernando State College), Brent Knight (Lansing Community College) and Karen Stout (Achieving the Dream).
