BREAKING: Democrats filibuster and block Trump Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch.

On Thursday, April 6, Senate Democrats impeded the Republican’s ability to end cloture on the floor. Republicans failed to secure the 60 votes needed to conclude the debate on Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, only securing 55 votes. Gorsuch is a conservative United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit Judge from Colorado, first confirmed in 2006.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has been threatening to use the “nuclear option,” began the process to eliminate the ability to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee by altering the voting rules to end cloture by lowering the number of votes needed to a simple majority of 51.

“This will be the first and last partisan filibuster of a Supreme Court nomination,” McConnell said.

Following McConnell’s efforts, the Senate voted to eliminate the ability to filibuster Supreme Court nominees at a margin of 52-48, clearing the way for Gorsuch to be confirmed by a simple majority vote. The vote is expected to take place at approximately 4 p.m. PST.
